Domain name quick guide

What is a domain name?

Domain names, such as hostingreborn.com, are used for identifying specific computers within the Internet.

Each hosting account of yours is associated with a primary domain name which is then used for accessing your web site and creating your email addresses.

The difference between domain names and web site or email addresses

  • Domain name: hostingreborn.com
  • Web site: www.hostingreborn.com
  • Email address: joe@hostingreborn.com

Web site and email addresses contain your domain name. The domain name is the part without the 'www' or 'joe@'. This is the part you should enter when adding a new hosting account.

Subdomains

Subdomains are (potentially) independent domains that are formed from primary domain names.

This site, hostingreborn.com, uses support.hostingreborn.com as the address for technical support information, and secure.hostingreborn.com for any information that needs encrypting.

These (support. and secure.) are subdomains of hostingreborn.com. They can be assigned their own IP addresses and, if needs be, be hosted on different servers.

Domain name rules

To be considered valid, an Internet domain name must:

  • contain only the characters a-z, 0-9 and the hyphen (-)
  • not start with a hyphen
  • consist of at least two labels ('example' and 'com' are the two labels of 'example.com')
  • consist of no more than 127 labels
  • be no longer than 255 characters
